Dreaming of visiting South Africa

In my first ‘most wanted to travel to’ posts I chose Iceland as it has almost everything I want to see and do including exploring volcanoes, seeing the Mid-Atlantic ridge and bathing in the magical waters of the blue lagoon, but coming a very close second is a visit to South Africa.

South Africa was our first choice for our honeymoon destination, however funds didn’t allow and we settled for a weeks break in the beautiful Greek island of Corfu, but it is still somewhere we would love to visit.

Cape Town is home to soaring Table Mountain, golden beaches and bountiful vineyards which gives us plenty to explore. Top of Hubby’s list to do is tandem-paraglide off Lion’s Head; abseil off the top of Table Mountain or zipwire down the mountain, whilst I might settle for a spot of wine tasting although the cable car ride to the top does sound very appealing.

Table Mountain

If a more gentle sport is more up your street, Cape Town is also home to some spectacular golf courses – just make sure you pack your sun screen!

Another activity that is right at the top of his wishlist is shark cage diving with Great White Sharks – I think I will stay firmly onboard the boat for that one or head off and do some whale watching instead.

South Africa

No visit to South Africa would be complete without a safari and I would love to see the animals in their natural habitats, especially the elephants!

Safari

If funds allowed we would also take a flight to Zimbawe to see the spectacular Victoria falls on the Zambezi river. Victoria Falls is the only waterfall in the world with a length of more than a kilometer and a height of more than hundred meters. It is also considered to be the largest fall in the world.

Victoria Falls

The noise of Victoria Falls can be heard from a distance of 40 kilometers, while the spray and mist from the falling water is rising to a height of over 400 meters and can be seen from a distance of 50 kilometers. No wonder that the local tribes used to call the waterfall Mosi-o-Tunya “The smoke that thunders”.

I think Hubby would love to bungee over the top but I’d be quite happy just watching the magnificent falls.

Have you visited South Africa – where would you recommend we visit?

  2. You’ve got me thinking now! My friend’s boyfriend (now husband) proposed to her on table top mountain. I’m probably too much of a wuss to go on safari, we did an alligator ride through the everglades for our 10th anniversary and I was petrified when we actually found one! I hope you get you chance to go, I would love to visit Iceland though.

  6. South Africa sounds like an amazing place to visit and also a scary place. I think I’d want to stay well away from the dangerous animals. I think i’d rather see them on camera… but the holiday sounds good and Victoria falls sounds wonderful! Angela from Daysinbed

  7. My uncle lives in South Africa and I plan on visiting him this year. I was born in Zambia which shares the mositunya with Zimbabwe and the Zambezi river starts in my local village in Zambia before it pours into the India ocean. Great post
