Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush

Kirby is one of Nintendo’s most iconic characters and its round appearance and ability to copy his foes powers made it a firm favourite and now it is back for a new magical adventure.

Available on the Wii U Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush comes to life in a world of clay, which creates a beautiful backdrop for his adventure.

Do you have the magic touch?

Then guide Kirby as he sets off on grand adventures in a hand-sculpted clay world.  You take control of Kirby with the stroke of a stylus and draw on the GamePad touchscreen to guide Kirby through the world by drawing lines to create rainbow-coloured clay ropes to move Kirby around freely, or tap him to attack enemies or blast through obstacles. Transformations include a submarine, rocket, and tank. In underwater levels, Kirby dons a swim mask. If his power level gets too low, a clay bandage appears on his head.

You don’t move Kirby directly but instead draw a path via the “rainbow paintbrush” and this game is best played using the gamepad and not the TV as you need to watch what you are doing. Provided this path begins under his feet, Kirby will embark along the path. Gravity need be no constraint; your path can take Kirby up walls and down slopes.

As this platform game progresses and Kirby meets challenges and threats the game gets trickier as once drawn, a path cannot be erased, so if you draw a path then have need to draw another one, the old one remains, which can mean Kirby pointlessly bounces between your two paths until the first, redundant one expires.

The music and visuals are amazing and the only real downside that we have with the game is that sometimes you can’t quite get Kirby to go in the direction you want as he rolls off into another enemy.

The game is rated a U and therefore suitable for the whole family.  This is by far Eliza’s favourite game although she is more interested in drawing the rainbows rather than defeating the enemy’s and progressing to the next level. I have to admit that although the boys enjoyed the game at first, they did lose interest fairly quickly.
