Get festive with flowers

At this dark and chilly time of year, we find ourselves looking to the lights of the Christmas tree and the smell of fresh gingerbread to keep our spirits up and surround ourselves with positivity. Flowers can be made really festive and the range of possibilities makes seasonal floral decorations something you can really have fun with. They’re also a tad classier than a lot of the mass-produced Christmas products out there. So, find some inspiration below and get festive with flowers this Christmas.

Bring in some greenery

Put a seasonal stamp on your flower displays by incorporating some fresh greenery from the garden. Think holly, eucalyptus, pine and bay, which are ideal for making your own swags and garlands. You can make the job a little easier by starting off with pre-made garlands or swags and customising them with your own additions. These are perfect for framing interesting architectural features in your home, or lining along the staircase. Remember to keep them around eye level for maximum effect.

Slotting a few evergreen branches into a bouquet of festive coloured flowers, in deep-red tones or frosty whites and blues, is another great idea – as is a flourish of pine cones. They look great attached to ribbons and hanging from anything from a picture frame to a door handle. They can equally be nestled into flower heads in a display for immediate Christmas character.

Berries

Berries come in a range of red shades that can even brink on purple – whether they’re real or of the artificial variety, they are an ideal way to transform a more ordinary bunch of flowers into a Christmas decoration. They can also be put on the tree, or scattered over the dinner table around your centre piece.

Cotton

Sprigs of dried cotton stalks are the perfect addition to any winter flower arrangement. With their tufts of snow- white fluff, they’re very Christmassy and a little unusual, too. They look great alone in a long vase and can also be snuggled into an existing bunch of winter flowers for festive fun.
