Travelling by Train with Children

Last month I ran a competition with First Hull Trains to win a family ticket for any route on their line and I asked how you keep the children entertained when travelling by train.

First Hull Trains have asked me to share all your tips on travelling by train with children, as train journeys can be a little more challenging if you have the small people in tow.

One of the most popular comments was to travel light and travel smart!  There is nothing worse than trying to carry a baby, buggy and numerous bags onto a train, plus there isn’t a great deal of room to store it especially if the train is busy!

Take favourite toys for small people, although I would recommend that you used a Teddy Tug or similar so they dont get lost like Eliza’s My Little Pony did at the weekend.  Older children like activities such as drawing, colouring and puzzles.

Food and Drink also featured highly as they can be pricey on trains.  Snacks are a great way of distracting fidgety children but avoid anything with too much sugar as you are asking for trouble.

We headed to London last weekend on the train, which takes around two hours from Bournemouth and the kids were brilliantly behaved.

The staff at the station were really helpful and explained to the little ones how a train is coupled as we watched one joining up.  They even got Isaac to check the lights to make sure it was done correctly.

Once on board we settled into our journey.  We took the boys Nintendo 2DS / 3Ds and the older two battled using their Pokemon games, whilst Eliza and watched a film on the iPad.  Sebastian got reset less towards the end of the journey, however we found that rolling a bottle back and forwards kept him entertained for ages!

On the journey back, we had magazines which had a gift of spy glasses in them.  These were brilliant and the kids spent the whole journey pretending they were spies.  We made up games using the views of the window and even the transport police joined in!

Travelling with kids on the train needn’t be stressful as long as you are prepared!
